"Train the Trainer" Deliverables

Each asynchronous module created in Articulate Rise 360 begins with an introductory video.

The scope of this project was to create presentation deliverables and asynchronous modules for the Core Knowledge (CK) Train the Trainer sessions.

Overview

This series of deliverables and asynchronous modules introduces CK employees to various aspects of the CK approach and curriculum, specifically K-5 Science and K-6 History and Geography:

The Goals

Core Knowledge employees designated as trainers participate in Train the Trainer activities, in this instance, consisting of Zoom sessions, asynchronous learning modules, quizzes, and a 3-day face-to-face workshop.

The webinars, asynchronous modules, and workshop consist of different learning objectives; sample objectives are as follows:

​

  1. Identify the core resources that make up various subject-matter curricula.
     

  2. Identify how a trainer would be able to determine if participants met a training component's objectives.
     

  3. Demonstrate what a training component looks and sounds like through the delivery of a sample training segment.
     

  4. Provide specific feedback that highlights delivery strengths and offers guidance around improvement.

K-2 and 3-5 Teacher Guides are core resources in the CK Science curriculum.

The Process

Through weekly meetings with the CK subject matter expert (SME), I was provided with a variety of resources intended to be transformed into cohesive, learner-focused deliverables. The PowerPoint for the 1-hour webinar was kept to only 40 slides, emphasizing presenter narration, minimal text on each slide, and relevant images when needed. Audience engagement consisted of reflection activities, tech-related tasks, scavenger hunt, and Google Form quiz.

The three asynchronous modules were created using Articulate Rise 360. I employed the vast majority of the features and tools that Rise has to offer, including

a video introduction embed, audio with transcripts, gallery blocks, knowledge checks, and interactive blocks. Each module concludes with an embedded Google Form quiz.

The final project consisted of learning materials for a two-day face-to-face workshop with the trainers in-training. The materials included a PowerPoint, two case studies, a jigsaw activity, a quiz-quiz-trade ice breaker, and a reflection activity for each day.

ADDIE and Rapid Prototyping

The processes known as ADDIE and rapid prototyping are quite common in the instructional design field. ADDIE refers to Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. While there is a certain order to this process, it does not have to be linear. I typically bounce between phases while constantly evaluating each aspect of my own process. In addition to my own reflections, the feedback from the SME lent to a heavy use of rapid prototyping, too. Similar to the use of formative and summative evaluation in learning, formative has been used in each phase of the ADDIE process. However, as is typical of instructional design work, the summative evaluation was not considered a part of my contract work with Core Knowledge.

Results and Takeaways

This project took six months to complete, with deadlines at appropriate intervals, based upon the scope of work. Throughout the process, I met with the SME every 1-2 weeks, who provided me with updates, clarifications, and constructive feedback. They were pleased with level of knowledge, skill, and detail given to each deliverable.
